Who says you have to have deep pockets to own property in Australia’s newest hotspot for the mega-rich and the mega-famous?

Hollywood superstar Chris Hemsworth and wife Elsa Pataky abandoned Tinsel Town for a more laid-back life in the northern NSW seaside town of Byron Bay and are raising their three children there.

Others to make the move to the Byron shire include model Gemma Ward, controversial chef Pete Evans, musician Angus Stone, television presenter Shelley Craft, musician and television presenter Natalie Bassingthwaite.

Prices have grown accordingly. Ten years ago the median house sale price for the Byron Shire was $615,000. Today it is $1.1 million, which represents a 12-month growth rate of 16.4 per cent, according to’s December Market Trends report.

Unit prices have also grown. Ten years ago the median unit price was $472,000 – these days it is $820,000, a 10.8 per cent price growth over the past 12 months.

These prices exceed Greater Sydney’s median house price of $1 million and the median unit price of $725,000.

This year the area’s sale price record was broken with the $22 million sale of a beachfront home at Wategos Beach.
